31-04-04 League Cup 1st Round Sawbridgeworth Town v Peterborough 0 - 5 Peterborough came to Crofters with an unbeaten run in the league and a reputation of being very difficult to play against as they field several U15 England squad players within their ranks. The Robins were able to field a full squad for this League Cup game and with 2 subs available they had the cover required also. The first half was played very much end to end for the first twenty minutes but time and again Sawbow had to defend the quick running Peterborough forwards who were being constantly asked to chase the long ball pumped forward from the back line. Although Sawbow were playing deeper than recently they were not able to stop divisional top scorer Jade White from opening the scoring for Peterborough on 24 minutes. Two more goals for the visitors followed before the break as Peterborough found Sawbridgeworth in a very lackluster mood. Chances for the Robins were few and far between but in reality Claire Everall in the Peterborough goal had very little to do. Playing with the slope in the second half it was felt that Sawbow may be able to get something back and they certainly started better than the back end of the first half. Efforts from Laura day, Ann Anstey and Natalie Till all lacked power or direction to test Everall but at least the efforts were being made. Peterborough got their fourth from the penalty spot after xox brought down Claire Knibbs in the box. The last goal of the game fell to Laura White and it gave Peterborough the door into the second round which will be played on 28th November. Sawbridgeworth will now enter the League Plate Competition which will see the first round being played on January 9th 2005. Peterborough selected Jackie frost as their player of the match but mention must be made of the tireless running of Ann Anstey. Squad: J.Frost, N.Clifford, N.xox, R.McFayden, C.Halfpenny, J.Gregory, A.Anstey, J.Stott, C.Poulton, L.Day, N.Till Subs Used: C.Turner, J.Pyne 25-04-04 THE DATE HAS BEEN SET FOR THE CLUBS PRESENTATION NIGHT. IT IS SATURDAY 12TH JUNE 2004. Make sure you put this date in your diary EVERY player is requested to attend with friends / family. Admission is free for players and guests will be charged £1.50 each. MATCH REPORT Sawbridgeworth Town v Stevenage Borough 0 - 2 It was hoped that this would be a party day as it was nice and sunny and it was the last game of the season. Although the day started OK it soon darkened when the arranged referee failed to turn up and a hasty replacement had to be found from the spectators present. After last weeks pitch surface of a slippery muddy expanse it was somewhat a shock to find the Crofters End pitch almost rock hard and dusty in places. The first half was a well contested affair with Stevenage having the upper hand for a greater percentage of the time although Sawbridgeworth did counter attack well . With xox, Kelly Taylor and Ann Anstey missing due to work and injuries the Robins were below par but still acquitted themselves fully during this first period. Claire Halfpenny and Joanne Gregory found themselves in different positions this week due to the injuries but were taking to their tasks well. Claire Poulton was also performing well with one of her few starts this season. The first half ended goalless but it was an even encounter that just needed a good final pass. With the slope in the Robins favour this half they felt they would get the better of their opponents and for the first 12 minutes of this half it looked as if the Robins would break down the Stevenage defence. As they pushed forward more and more. Sharon Dawson came more into the game this half and along with Gregory they started to put pressure on the Borough midfield. On 61 minutes Poulton was replaced by Michelle Wood because Lucy Kirk had been winning everything in the air and Wood had the presence to counter her dominance. When the game looked to going for a draw the inevitable happened when Stevenage went ahead with a goal by Katie Light on 72 minutes. Charlotte Turner replaced Laura Day with 15 minutes left to play as Day had pulled her groin. Then with just 5 minutes left a poor defensive header found Kelly Hughes of Stevenage who lobbed Debbie Williams in the Robins goal for the visitors second. Jackie Frost was voted player of the match by the opposition but mention must go to the hard working Nicky Clifford and Joanne Gregory who had a solid game throughout. Fortunately some of the squad were able to celebrate as they watched Arsenal win the championship at the after match get together. Squad: D.Williams, N.Clifford, J.Frost, C.Halfpenny, J.Pyne, C.Poulton, S.Dawson, J.Gregory, E.Laing, C.Long, L.Day Subs Used; M.Wood, C.Turner. 18-04-04 Sawbridgeworth Town v Aylsham Town 2 - 4 With this being a rerun of our cup game just a few weeks ago Sawbow entered this game with a determination to equal or better the previous encounter, as it was felt that the last game was lost by the changes made rather than by the team so all was to play for. With Stalwart defender xox starting a 35 day ban and still without Kelly Taylor and also for today we were without Joanne Gregory who had family commitments the team was depleted but still determined to make amends. The first half started with both sides trying hard to counter the poor playing conditions and it became a battle of the midfield with neither side really dominating, it was a question of who made the least mistakes would eventually get on top. Debbie Williams continued from last week with a string of fine saves and Clare Halfpenny playing in an unfamiliar role as centre back Sawbow were competing for everything and not being overrun. Ann Anstey sustained a bad kick to her left foot when she went in for a 50-50 ball and received treatment off the field which reduced the home side to 10 men for some 6 minutes. With the score still 0 - 0 with 40 minutes gone it looked on the cards that the half would finish scoreless but then a rash challenge in the box by Jackie Frost gave the referee no option but to award a penalty which was duly converted to put the visitors one up. With heads still down after a cruel decision Aylsham attacked down the right and as the ball was played into the box it was calmly slotted home for the visitors to go in at half time 2 - 0 which certainly did not reflect the game so far. The half time team talk revolved around the subject of not loosing the second half but putting every effort into trying to win it. On 51 minutes Frost went some way to redeeming her first half error by lobbing the ball to Laura Day who pulled one back for the Robins to make the score 1 - 2. For the 20 minutes the game was being played more and more in the Aylsham half but chances were at a premium. Aylsham were defending well and closing down Day and Claire Long whenever they looked dangerous. Aylsham played a hopeful ball forward and on 73 minutes went 3 - 1 up when Frost was outpaced and the ball beat the advancing Williams. Five minutes later the score was 4 - 1 to the visitors as Sawbow were found wanting at the back as they tried to push forward to score a goal. With just 9 minutes left Sawbow started to play again and Long reduced the deficit with a well taken goal. Although Sawbridgeworth continued to press towards the end of this game Aylsham defended well and just deserved the result on the day. Clare Halfpenny was voted player of the match by the opposition, Mention must also be given to Laura Day and Claire Long who had their best game together for a long while along with another fine performance from Debbie Williams. Squad: D.Williams, N.Clifford, J.Frost, C.Halfpenny, J.Pyne, E.Laing, S.Dawson, A.Anstey, C.Turner, C.Long, L.Day. Sub Used; C.Poulton 11-04-04 Stanway v Sawbridgeworth Town 5 - 2 Having lost 4-0 to Stanway just a few weeks ago in the league, today's game was not going to be easy. Along with the fact that influential players Sharon Dawson (Not available), Kelly Taylor (knee injury), Claire Long (ill), and Michelle Wood (ill), Sawbow went to the game knowing the side would be a patched up group. Whilst not looking to lose, the main target was to better the result from last time so as to gauge our progress. The game started briskly with the home side taking the early exchanges but with Debbie Williams in superb form the game remained level for the first 25 minutes. Then from yet another attack the ball was threaded through the middle of the park and was neatly tucked away for the home side to start the scoring. 12 minutes later Stanway earned themselves a corner and from the well worked set piece Sawbow found themselves 2-0 down when the ball was headed with power into the top of the net. With half time beckoning and playing a little bit of added time Sawbo lost the ball in the middle of the park and the speed of the Stanway forwards was to much for the Robins defence and the ball was again neatly tucked away for the home side to end the half with a deserved 3-0 lead. During the half Sawbo had competed well and had carved out the odd half chances but was not able to finish. Changes had to be made with the Sawbo set up and a slight reshuffle saw Clare Halfpenny revert to left back Jessica Pyne moved to left midfield and Jo Gregory moved into the centre midfield slot. With these changes Sawbo looked a little bit more composed but when a easy ball was played deep into the Sawbo defensive third just outside the box Williams slipped and the ball was taken up by Stanway who then had the easiest of tap in's for their forth on 67 minutes. Although it seems that Stanway had all of the ball Sawbo were getting more of it as the second half went on with Laura Day, Jo Gregory and Claire Poulton all having half chances to get on the score sheet. On 75 minutes Stanway forced another corner and scored to make the score a convincing 5-0 to the home side. But Sawbo were not finished and this time the half chance was converted as a cross from the right from Emma Laing drifted across the six yard box Pyne was quickest to react and she scored her first goal for the club and Sawbo's first of the game on 85 minutes. Now inspired Sawbo pushed more forward and gained a free kick 25 yards out on the right wing. Ann Anstey floated the ball towards goal and although xox was seen to head the ball into the goal she admitted that the ball had already crossed the line for Anstey to notch up her first goal for the club this season on 87 minutes. Sawbo were constantly under pressure throughout this game and credit must go to all the players for keeping it together for the entire game. Debbie Williams was voted player of the match by the opposition which was totally supported by the manager of Sawbow. At the end of this game it was felt that the mission had been completed as we had bettered our previous performance against a very good and well organised side. Squad: D.Williams, N.Clifford, N.xox, J.Frost, J.Pyne, E.Laing, A.Anstey, C.Halfpenny, J.Gregory, C.Poulton, L.Day. Sub Not Used: C.Long 04-04-04 Sawbridgeworth Town v Arlesey Town 3 - 0 The first encounter between these two sides ended with the Robins being beaten 3-1 when it was expected to come away with a win as Sawbow had started the season with high hopes and Arlesey Town had not gained a point. Today saw the two sides level pegging in the league with Arlesey just 1 point ahead so it was on the cards that this game would be a very close one as both sides would be looking to gain the advantage over the other. Sawbo started the brighter and although playing up the slope and with the wind in their faces they were producing the better attacking football as the ball was being played across the park and down both flanks as the home side searched for the opening goal. Sharon Dawson continued where she left off last week with a series of superb corners throughout the first half but again the final touch was not there for the home side to push ahead. Debbie Williams in the Robins goal was quick off her line to drive the ball forward to alleviate the danger but all in all she was not fully tested. Superb first half defensive performances by Nicky Clifford, xox, Jackie Frost and Clare Halfpenny stopped short anything that even looked as if it was going to apply pressure on the Sawbo goal. The first half finished with a 0 - 0 score line but could well have seen the home side three up. The interval always seems to come at the wrong time as over the last couple of weeks Sawbo have not responded after the break to the same level as before but this week was different as the complete set of players could feel that the game was there for the taking. All season Sawbo have not had that elusive stroke of luck going there way but during this second half that was put to rest. xox picked the ball up a couple of yards inside her own half and launched a forward ball forward into the Arlesey half, with the wind behind her the ball gained height and speed and as the ball fell to ground it struck the pitch just inside the Arlesey penalty box, the keeper was slow to get to the bounce and she had to watch in awe as the ball bounced over her head and into the net for Sawbow to go 1 - 0 up. on 56 minutes. Laura Day was now becoming a pain in the neck to the Arlesey back line as she constantly tested them for pace and ability and time and again she came out on top and on 78 minutes when the ball from the Arlesey keeper was headed back into Day's path by Dawson, the move culminated in the best goal of the game as she produce the cross for Claire Long to side foot the ball into the goal for Sawbow's much deserved second goal. Arlesey Town were now becoming despondent and started to question quite vehemently with the referee each and every 50-50 decision. Then on 88 minutes Sawbo were awarded a free kick just inside the touchline on the left flank and Jackie Frost floated a superb ball into the Arlesey box and found xox who headed home from 10 yards for her second and Sawbo's third. The overall outcome was a decisive win for the home team who had played the entire game at full throttle and did not allow Arlesey to get a foothold on the game. Every player had given their all with exceptional performances from Ann Anstey, Laura Day, xox, Sharon Dawson, Nicky Clifford, Emma Laing and Jo Gregory. Laura Day was voted player of the match by the opposition and for her persistence I think she just about edges the vote of the manager. Mention must be given to the two subs Claire Poulton and Charlotte Turner who did not get used today because the Sawbo side had no one playing who deserved to come off. This was after a very fruitful first 10 minutes which saw the Robins edge ahead 1-0. In the end the home side were stronger and deserved their win. Today should see a better game as Sawbo have improved and are looking to go further in this league plate competition. Playing at home Sawbo were the earliest to settle and but for a combination of good defending and poor finishing could have been 2—0 up. After 22 minutes Sawbo had yet another corner and as Kelly Taylor attacked the ball her left knee gave way and she was reduced to extreme pain on the ground. After a quick examination it was decided to stretcher her off the pitch (after hospital examination she has been diagnosed as having dislocated her knee and knee ligaments) Michelle Wood replace Taylor and the rest of the half continued in much the same way as the first 20 minutes. Towards the end of the half Aylsham started to show signs of getting it together as they mounted several late attacks. The second half was again a question of who could make the first breakthrough and as the half progressed it was looking like it would end up as a 0—0 draw which would mean extra time. On 61 minutes Sawbo made their second substitution of the game when Ann Anstey was taken off and replaced by Claire Long then on 65 minutes Aylsham pushed the ball through and with the attacker and defender locked in the chase for the ball Debbie Williams in the Sawbo goal didn’t quite make the ball and Aylsham were a goal up. Shortly after this Sawbo made their third and final substitution as Kelly Mullender replaced Emma Laing. The substitutions did not do the trick as on 85 minutes when Sawbo had pushed up looking for the equalizer Aylsham broke down their right and crossed to two attackers who were unmarked in the middle of the six yard box and had the easiest of chances to put the visitors 2-0 which was to be the final score. Overall the score did not reflect the game but as manager I am pleased with the performance as we showed a great improvement form the earlier game. 21-03-04 Sawbridgeworth Town v Stanway 0 - 4 This was the first league meeting between the two sides since both teams were in the Region. The only meeting was a cup game that saw Stanway emerge as winners by the odd goal. Sawbo were trying to restart again after last weeks demise to Cottenham but Stanway were going to be much stiffer opposition. Sawbow took the game to Stanway in the opening minutes and had much of the opening encounters but with this attacking front the chance of a counter attack was left open and after 5 minutes much against the run of play Stanway edged in front . The rest of the half saw much of the same with Sawbow playing perhaps the better football but being constantly broken down by the counter attack. It did not help the cause when xox had to be substituted after she pulled a muscle in her thigh and was unable to continue. With the main center back gone after just 20 minutes a rapid reshuffle was made which saw Ann Anstey take on the centre back roll and Michelle Wood coming on and taking the midfield roll left by Anstey. Debbie Williams was also called upon again to make a couple of saves to keep the home side in it. The half finished with the home side just 1-0 down but still in the game. The second half saw a different Stanway team as they re-started the game with the wind at their backs and they took advantage of the fact. Sawbow's young center back Jessica Pyne was having an outstanding game and during the second half was constantly being asked to excel and she did not let the side down. Stanway extended their lead after 58 minutes after a good break down the left flank. there were long periods when Sawbow found themselves chasing shadows as Stanway continued to show physical strength and prowess in the tackle to gain the advantage and added two more goals before the end of the game. Ann Anstey was substituted during the second half and was replaced by Claire Poulton as a result of a slight head injury (as a precaution). It was generally thought that two of the goals were questionable with regard to the offside rule but the referee allowed the game to continue. Sawbow had contributed to a very good game and in the end were beaten by a team that were more physical in the challenge and more concentrated during the game. Claire Long was voted player of the match by the opposition, but mention must go to Jessica Pyne who had an outstanding game. Squad: D.Williams, N.Clifford, N.xox, J.Pyne, J.Frost, J.Gregory, K.Taylor, A.Anstey, C.Halfpenny, C.Long, L.Day Subs Used; M.Wood, C.Poulton. 14-03-04 Cottenham United v Sawbridgeworth Town 2 - 0 The last meeting between these two sides saw a very dominant Sawbridgeworth Town effort end with an unusual 0 - 0 score line. Knowing that both teams had improved since then It was down to who wanted the result the most. The game started really as the last game had finished with Cottenham pressurizing the Sawbow final third but the now well practiced back line held firm and Cottenham were stopped in their tracks. On 5 minutes a free kick awarded to the Robins saw Michelle Wood fire it straight at the Cottenham keeper Tracey Ware-Lane. Within the 2 minutes xox miss-cued a clearance straight up in the air and with the wind gusting and twirling the ball dropped and Debbie Williams had to be alert in the Sawbo goal as she palmed the ball to safety. On 10 minutes Sawbow had played the ball into the Cottenham final third and forced two successive corners but although pressure was being exerted on the home side goal no real attempt was made to convert. The rest of the half saw very little goal mouth action as both sides were winning and losing the ball with great regularity in the midfield third which stopped any real flow to the game. The second half saw much the same as the first but after 5 minutes you could see that with the wind behind their backs Cottenham were gaining in confidence. The home side were playing more and more forward balls to their very quick front duo of Nadine Sillence and Laura Spaxman and but for a very sound back line they would have been clear and on goal several times. On 52 minutes the deadlock was broken by a freak situation. Sawbow's Jess Pyne got the ball at her feet at the edge of the six yard box and cleared the ball forward only to see it cannon off Debbie Kerr and past the diving Williams to put the home side one up. Sawbow against the strong wind tried to pick up the pace and they started to gain ground into the Cottenham final third but time and again Cottenham's sweeper Annette Stock was there to stop Sawbow's Laura Day from progressing. Then on 80 minutes after a succession of man to man tussles against xox the Sawbow girl had taken enough and retaliated. The referee who had had a good game saw the retaliation but not the previous actions and had no option but to red card xox. From the resultant free kick Laura McMands drove the ball under the cross bar for Cottenham's second. Although having conceded two goals the game was very much an even contest and a draw would have been the right result, but goals count and Sawbow now have to pick themselves up and look forward to the home game against Stanway week. Laura Day was voted as player of the match by the opposition but overall xox, Claire Halfpenny and Ann Anstey stood out. Squad: D.Williams, J.Pyne, N.xox, J.Frost, E.Laing, S.Dawson, M.Wood, A.Anstey, C.Halfpenny, L.Day, C.Poulton Sub used: J.Gregory. 07-03-04 Godmanchester Rovers v Sawbridgeworth Town 1 - 2 This being the third meeting between the two sides this season one league one plate and now league again Godmanchester were sure to try and better the two defeats inflicted on them by the Robins. The day started off with grey skies but it quickly turned to blue with glorious sunshine and with the pitch in good condition the football should flow. Then the referee blew his whistle an we had a hail storm which lasted for ten minutes. During this time Joanne Gregory starting her first game for a while found Claire Long on 2 minutes who drove the ball home to put the visitors 1 up. The half continued in much the same way as it started with Sawbridgeworth Town playing most of the football in the Godmanchester half but although good chances were created on more than a couple of occasions the final pass (shot) did not end up in the back of the net. Much like the previous game Godmanchester came out for the second half with a great deal more determination ad started to to gain possession in the Sawbow half. and but for a well organized back line could have found themselves at least level. After a spell of pressure by the Robins a cross from Kelly Taylor was met superbly by Long who netted her and Sawbow's second on 70 minutes. A little bit of sitting back hoping the game was one resulted in Godmanchester getting a goal back when Amy Sheeran scored in the 79th minute. As a general comment the game was played in a superb spirit by both teams and it was helped by the referee Mr. L. Parnham who allowed the game to flow. The opposition player of the match was Laura Day although a mention must go to Ann Anstey, Kelly Taylor, and xox who all played well throughout. Squad: D.Williams, N.Clifford, N.xox, J.Frost, J.Gregory, S.Dawson, K.Taylor, A.Anstey, C.Halfpenny, L.Day, C.Long Subs used: E.Laing, J.Pyne, C.Turner Sub not used: C.Poulton 01-03-04 Sawbridgeworth Town v Cornard Ladies 5 - 1 On a very sticky pitch and playing Cornard Ladies who traveled to the game with just eight players this was going to be a Sunday when one of two things can happen, either everything goes ok or you encounter problems and nothing goes right. Well with the numerical advantage I don't think it was ever in question that Sawbo would get beaten but could we turn the extra players into an advantage only time would tell. As expected Sawbow took the game to Cornard and but for some good goalkeeping by Emma Couch in the Cornard goal Sawbow could have been in front as early as the fourth minute when Laura Day was put through. The pressure finally paid off in the 15th minute when Clare Halfpenny netted her first goal for the club this season after Day had slotted the ball to her on the edge of the box. 10 minutes later further pressure on the Cornard goal saw Day convert after good work by Claire Poulton had put the ball through. The rest of the half saw the Cornard goal peppered with shots but all were tame efforts by comparison. Just after the break Day scored her second of the match with a long distant effort on 49 minutes. Cornard player of the match Julie King was inspired at the heart of the Cornard defence as time and again she was called upon to thwart a goal scoring opportunity but on 56 minutes the best move of the game saw the best goal of the game scored by Claire Poulton her first for the club. The ball was won at the back by Jackie Frost who ran with the ball before passing to Halfpenny (Tups) on the left wing. Tups left her defender and crossed the ball into the path of Day who found Poulton running in on goal from the left and she shot the ball home. The home side then had a mad couple of minutes as they conceded ground and Cornard were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box on the left side. Cornard's Lucy Barber struck a superb free kick that lifted and then dropped just under the bar for a consolation goal. Day completed her hat trick when she was put through by Sharon Dawson on 81 minutes. The game could and perhaps should have been won by more goals but applause must be given to a dogged Cornard side that battled for everything which made it difficult for the Robins throughout. Second half substitutions were made by the Robins which were not done as a reflection of the way players had played. Jackie Frost and Emma Laing were replaced by Jessica Pyne and Jo Gregory. These players were substituted to give an opportunity to two on the bench to have a run out so as to speak. Claire Long replace Claire Poulton with 15 minutes left as Poulton had run herself out. Kelly Taylor was an unused sub on the day. The opposition player of the match was given to Laura Day. But mention must go to Emma Laing and Jackie Frost who both had outstanding games. Squad: D.Williams, N.Clifford, N.xox, J.Frost, E.Laing, S.Dawson, M.Wood, A.Anstey, C.Halfpenny, L.Day, C.Poulton. Subs Used: J.Pyne, J.Gregory, C.Long Sub Not Used: K.Taylor. 26-02-04 Well the League Plate draw has been made and we have been drawn against fellow division one side Aylsham Town at Home. Our only meeting against Aylsham ended in defeat but that was a while ago and on that day we were not at our best. Players not available that day were Debbie, Karen, Kelly M, and Charlotte. We still managed to go with 13 players but did not perform well in the fog. Hopefully time will be different. 23-02-04 After a discussion with The Eastern Region Women's Football League Secretary Alex Franklin it appears that this web site is viewed by member clubs of the Region and comments made on this page have not been received very well. Firstly I have to say that these comments are a personal point of view as with any reports one reads within the national media. If the content within these pages offends, it is not an intentional act against any individual or collective persons it is just an individuals point of view. On behalf of the club I apologize for any remark that has caused concern. 22-02-04 Godmanchester Rovers v Sawbridgeworth Town 0 - 3 Vauxhall Aftersales League Plate 1st Round The old saying is that football is a game of two halves and today was no exception. The ground at Godmanchester is flat and large and also with no wind protection and on a day like today it was a matter of who had the wind at their backs was going to have the advantage. Sawbow won the toss and decided to take the advantage of the wind in the first half but for the first ten minutes it was Godmanchester who showed the better touches and the greater awareness, but Sawbow gradually got into their stride and began to use the gusting wind to their advantage. Up[ until the fifteenth minute neither keeper had much to do as the game was being played in the middle of the park. As we approached the half hour mark one of the best passing moves in this first half saw a seven man move finish with Sharon Dawson quickly feeding Kelly Taylor who slotted the ball to Laura Day who found Claire Long who drove the ball home for Sawbow to go into the lead. Two minutes later the ball was in the back of the net again when from a Godmanchester goal kick the ball fell to Taylor who lobbed Jan Cole in the Godmanchester goal. A six minute sequence was finished when on 34 minutes again from a poor goal kick Long collected the ball ran towards the goal beating the advancing Cole to give Sawbow a three goal lead. Although more pressure was put on the Rovers defence Sawbow were unable to covert the chances that opened up for them. The second half was always going to be a lottery as to who could control the ball the better with the windy conditions still prevailing around the ground. Rovers started with more confidence and made definite inroads into the Sawbow midfield. Stout defending by Jackie Frost, Nicky Clifford and Clare Halfpenny kept the Rovers attacks down to a minimum. Overall the second half was an even affair with both sides trying to gain control of the midfield but Sawbow just edged it but could not gain an overall advantage. The opposition did not have to pick a player of the match so the decision is left to me and I have to mention Ann Anstey who battled throughout. Squad: D.Williams, N.Clifford, J.Frost, C.Halfpenny, C.Poulton, K.Taylor, M.Wood, S.Dawson, A.Anstey, C.Long, L.Day, Sub Used: J.Pyne 15-02-04 Stevenage Borough Vixens Vs Sawbridgeworth Town 5 - 0 I am lost for words to how to start this match report because all I can think about is the referee. 85 year old Mr. R Cross was the man in black. Incapable of being able to keep up with play, deaf, and one must also question his ability to see any great distances. As the game went on it is obvious that the home support which was loud and offensive, and the intimidation was also going to become a major factor in the way in which the game was going to be controlled by the referee. As early as the 13th minute it was obvious that the referee was not going to give any contentious decisions against the home side when Claire Poulton was through and on goal but was brought down from behind just on the edge of the box. The referee said that it was a coming together of players, well it most probably did look like that when you are forty yards behind the play. To every one else it was a free kick at least and a red card for the last defender stopping a goal scoring opportunity. The referee also constantly made a decision and then with total disregard for his own decision changed his mind when the opposition supporters called for a different decision. Considering the difference in league position between the two clubs Sawbo held the home side to 1 - 0 at half time mainly due to the heroics of Debbie Williams in the Sawbo goal who made more saves than she cares to remember to keep Sawbo in the game. The second half saw a mad 10 minutes as the home side scored three goals to extend the lead to 4 - 0 and just before the final whistle Stevenage scored their 5th. During the second half both Michelle Wood, Sharon Dawson and Kelly Taylor all came close and Laura Day could have got closer had she not been constantly tackled ankle height without any real attempt to get the ball. Overall Sawbridgeworth Town Women's Football Club was a credit to the league in which they play and a credit to the football club who's name they hold. Intimidation from supporters to players is the lowest form of support one can give and when this is also directed at the club linesman who does the job as a favour with no payment then you must question if this club should be in this league or not. Debbie Williams was voted player of the match by the opposition and this was totally supported by the Sawbo squad and management. Squad: D.Williams, E.Laing, J.Frost, N.xox, K.Lau, S.Dawson, K.Taylor, M.Wood, A.Anstey, L.Day, C.Poulton 30-01-04 With all the rain that fell the week before last it was no surprise when the game was called off against Arlesey Town. The pitch at Sawbo certainly needs time after rain to re-settle. So after a couple of days of fine weather it looked as if our game this coming weekend would be played, BUT then came the snow. Although the snow is clearing fast the resultant extra water going into the ground Stanway have had their ground at Colchester called off by the council. We will have to look at doing something weekend. 20-01-04 Disappointment all around on Sunday as the game had to be postponed against Stevenage Borough due to the pitch being in an unplayable condition. On Saturday morning with the frost the pitch was rolled flat and looked in reasonable condition although the middle was quite wet and sticky. As the frost began to go the ground again looked much the same as last Sunday and with a Reserve game being played on it on Saturday afternoon the decision was made that the pitch would be not be able to sustain more than one game being played on it. The good thing that has happened this week though has been the indoor training at Mark Hall School. Although our first night last week was a bit slippery I think everyone got something out of it and now we know what to expect from the area so we can adjust training accordingly. The current weather conditions are not doing us any favors with regard to the pitch but I am sure Jim will do all he can to make it playable for this weekend. 12-01-04 We have been drawn away to Godmanchester Rovers in the first round of the Vauxhall Aftersales League Plate to be played on Sunday February 22nd 2004 11-01-04 Sawbridgeworth Town v Corton Ladies 0 - 2 With the pitch at Crofters just playable both sides acquitted themselves well in a very even game. Sawbow fielded a slightly altered line up and as the manager I must put my hands up and say it did not work, I got it wrong. Corton still smarting from the defeat at the beginning of the season started in brisk fashion but Sawbo responded well and for the first twenty minutes could and should have been goals up but poor finishing and a series of poor final passes resulted in a zero goal tally . xox had to be substituted on 22 minutes when she pulled a thigh muscle. Jo Gregory came on to replace and was thrown into the action and the Sawbo back line had to be reshuffled to compensate. On a rare breakaway Corton played a rare decisive through ball which dissected the Sawbo defence and Rebeka Marriott sprinted clear and with just Debbie Williams to beat slotted the ball home for the visitors to edge ahead on 26 minutes. Williams was to become savior twice more before the break as she dived to save efforts from the Corton front line. The second half seemed to go on forever as the players tired in the sticky conditions, more spaces were being exploited by the visitors and on 65 minutes they incresed their lead when Marriott scored her second. For reasons best known to the players the Sawbo side started to get frustrated with themselves and the team started to make more and more mistakes. Michelle Wood came on to replace Jessica Pyne and the formation changed to a 3 - 5 - 2. Although Sawbo started to push the visitors back there were still no real attempts on goal . With 15 minutes left Kelly Mullender replaced Jo Gregory on the left flank . Sawbo finished the game slightly miffed at not scoring in the first half as this would have given confidence to the team for the rest of the game , as it was it turned out to be a chasing game but it was made difficult because of the conditions. Jackie Frost was voted player of the match by the opposition, but mention must go to Ann Anstey and Jessica Pyne who both battled well throughout. 04-01-04 Haverhill U's v Sawbridgeworth Town 4 - 2 As we start the new year we also start the second set of matches within the league and today saw the second game against Haverhill. With the luxury of having 4 subs on the bench Sawbow started briskly and matched the current leagues second placed team in every department. But on 11 minutes when put under pressure a poor back pass put Keeper Debbie Williams under pressure but she managed to clear the ball. A minute later Haverhill's Cammell put the ball against the bar. The game became an end to end encounter for the 15 minutes as both sides looked for the space to work in but on 26 minutes a poorly executed throw down the Sawbo left fell to a Haverhill player and a quick pass set Guyon through and she put the home side 1 up. The game settled down again and but for a mad two minute spell just before the break the sides could have come in with just a one goal separation but poor marking on two occasions let Haverhill in and the half finished at 3-0 to the home side. After the interval Sawbo stepped up a gear and were competing for every ball with purpose. Then on 55 minutes Claire Long drove the ball home to reduce the arrears. Then with a small lapse of concentration Haverhill made it 4 - 1 on 67 minutes. The Robins were now up for it and more pressure resulted in a second goal this time by Kelly Taylor on 76 minutes. With the game becoming more and more in favor of the visitors as the home side started to feel the pressure and then the most bizarre set of circumstances happened. Sharon Dawson stood still on the by line as a throw was about to be taken by Haverhill. The Haverhill player ran some 6 yards to the spot were Dawson was standing and dispatched a throw to one of her players. The referee then blew the whistle and gave Haverhill a throw for encroachment. (funny that as the Sawbo player had not moved) With this Dawson approached Mr Gordon Cox the referee to ask why this was given and was then booked for dissent. As she walked away from the referee still in amazement as to the decision she uttered a few words to herself and the referee called her back and promptly showed her the red card. The referee certainly lost the plot and also showed a rank regard to women's football and fair play as he perused a biased display of refereeing towards the home team. Laura Day was given the player of the match by the opposition but Nicky Clifford needs to be mentioned. A lively start that saw the home side take control early on but time and again the United defense stood firm and prevented a shot on target. Sawbo had some 80% of the play but could not mount a serious shot on goal during the first period although one cannot fault the team for effort and commitment during this first period. The second half continued where the first had finished with Sawbo in control. Cottenham did try to get out of their half but were continually caught off side by the very efficient Sawbo back line. After an hour Sawbo made the first substitution to try and unlock the Cottenham defensive attitude when Claire Poulton replaced Laura Day up front, but after 10 minutes it was clear that further changes needed to be made to try and open the door Then the midfield was changed when Sharon Dawson was replaced by Michelle Wood and later and Emma Laing replaced Claire Long. The alterations to the playing pattern did not have the desired effect and the scores remained level till the end. Kelly Taylor was voted player of the match by the opposition but mention must go to xox who played as if she had not been away and guided the back line superbly Squad: D.Williams, N.Clifford, N.xox, J.Frost, C.Halfpenny, A.Anstey, S.Dawson, K.Taylor, J.Gregory, L.Day, C.Long. fixture saw the Robins travel to the second longest away game of the
season to play Aylsham Town. It turned out to be a poor journey traveling
through nice sunshine at the beginning but finishing the journey in fog.
Arriving at the pitch we found that the location of the pitch kept the
fog almost trapped and although you could see from one end of the pitch
to the other it was not possible to fully identify the player on the
ball. Having arrived at the pitch a little later than expected it became
a rush to get ready and out of the dressing room before kick off. A
rushed but not complete warm up saw us kick off on time but not in the
right frame of mind. The game started with the home side fully warmed up
and they were at least a yard faster than Sawbo to every ball. Early
attacks were made down the flanks which stretched the Robins back line
and on 7 minutes the home side were ahead through Laura Bergman. Sawbo
responded well to this setback and attacked Aylsham and from a cross
from the right Claire Long equalized on 11 minutes. Although Sawbo
continued to push forward the more decisive attacks came form the home
side and it showed in the finishing when at the interval Aylsham had
added another two goals through Vicky Phillips and Shelly Wong.
After the interval the game continued in the same
vane with Aylsham making most of the attacks and although Sawbow altered
their playing line up it could not prevent a further two goals being
scored by Jenny Thurtle, and Laura Bergman getting her second of the
game. Overall a poor Sawbow performance that will need to be rectified
in the game so that confidence is restored. Jackie Frost was
awarded the player of the match by the opposition which was fully
endorsed by me. Squad: J.Frost, N.Clifford, A.Anstey, J.Pyne,

16-11-03 Sawbridgeworth Town v Godmanchester Rovers 5 - 0 Following on the pattern from last week Sawbow took the game to Rovers and early possession led to the first goal as Kelly Taylor cut in from the right flank and hit the back of the net from 15 yards on 7 minutes. More pressure from the home side forced the visitors to concede a corner and once again a precision corner by Sharon Dawson found Claire Long who netted the second on 17 minutes. The Robins third goal saw Taylor take the ball through the middle of the park and shoot from some 12 yards on 19 minutes. Rovers were not being allowed to compete in the game as time and again Sawbow won the ball in the middle of the park and pushed them back. Although Rovers did manage a period of some 10 minutes where they defended better the pressure being enforced upon them and it was just a matter of time before it would break down. Michelle Wood won the ball on the right and floated a cross into the six yard box where Long met the ball just before Jan Cole in the Rovers goal and headed Sawbo 4-0 up on 39 minutes. After the break Rovers were more determined and for the first five minutes kept the ball in the middle third, but on 52 minutes Taylor was the goal getter as she bagged her hat-trick. Overall Sawbow played the better of the two teams although there was a time when they lost their shape and purpose and it allowed Rovers to get back into the game. Stalwart defending by Nicky Clifford, Ann Anstey and Jessica Pyne kept any shots on target to a minimum in front of Jackie Frost in the Sawbo goal to quite tame efforts. The movement and passing of the home side created several good goal scoring opportunities and it gives the impetus to go on and keep improving . Kelly Taylor was voted player of the match by Rovers, and mention must be given to Emma Laing, Ann Anstey and Jessica Pyne who all had outstanding performances Squad: J.Frost, N.Clifford, A.Anstey, J.Pyne, E.Laing, K.Taylor, S.Dawson, M.Wood, J.Gregory, C.Long, L.Day Sub Used: H.Jones 09-11-03 Cornard Ladies v Sawbridgeworth Town 1 - 3 Well it had to happen sooner rather than later, the day when the team became one. From the first whistle The Robins were as one with neat inter passing and for the first twenty minutes could have been 3 - 0 up with shots from Laura Day, Claire Long, and Clare Halfpenny all missing the goal posts by a whisker or driving the ball straight at Sarah Wetton in the Cornard goal. With a quick breakaway Cornard hit the upright but Sawbridgeworth were running the midfield with Michelle Wood starting her first game of the season although there were a couple of substitute appearances prior, alongside Sharon Dawson and Kelly Taylor in the middle and Emma Laing and Clare Halfpenny on the flanks. Then a mistake happened Jackie Frost was closed down very quickly by Tracey Clark and her forced pass back did not have enough weight behind it and Steph Hanratty sprinted onto the loose ball and put Cornard ahead against the run of play. Sawbow to their credit kept playing the football with great effect and further shots from Day, Long and also Laing all went begging but the first half domination of play should have brought the sides in at least level but Sawbow came in 1 - 0 down. The second half saw Sawbridgeworth Town take total control and with the odd hiccup all but played the entire second half in the Cornard half of the pitch. On 61 minutes the scores were level when a kick from keeper Debbie Williams found Taylor who quickly flicked the ball into the path of Day, this time Day calmly shot the ball past Wetton into the back of the net. Nine minutes later The Robins were in front when after sustained pressure Cornard pushed the ball away for a corner. Dawson delivered a superb corner that Wood managed to get to first but her volley parried off Wetton into the path of Long who drove home. The game was put beyond doubt when another corner delivered with precision by Dawson again found Wood who headed home the third goal for a very emphatic Sawbridgeworth win. Laura Day was voted player of the match by the opposition. The manager has found it difficult to pick an individual who outshone any other so this week the decision is to give the entire team his player of the match. Well done. A special mention for Jessica Pyne who traveled but was not used. Squad: D.Williams, N.Clifford, N.xox, J.Frost, E.Laing, K.Taylor, S.Dawson, M.Wood, C.Halfpenny, L.Day, C.Long. Unfortunately Sawbow were their own worst enemy as they failed time and again to close down their opponents. When a clearance fell to the Mulbarton midfielder she hit the ball with height and power and from just inside the Sawbow half netted the ball just under the crossbar for the opener on 18 minutes. Some might say a speculative effort but the player was left unattended in the middle of the park and Sawbow were penalized. The Robins fell two behind when Nicky Clifford failed to make contact on the right and the ball found its way into the inside netting. A result of bad marking not only on the flank but also from the flank to the goal as players stood and watched as the ball passed. Ann Anstey was her usual self in her midfield roll alongside Kelly Taylor who battled hard in the middle but with no real success, these coupled with Emma Laing who also was a little subdued the Sawbow midfield played the first half with no real conviction and with Laura Day having no shots on target because of very poor supply were rightly so two goals down at the break. Sharon Dawson could have had a shot on goal as the Mulbarton defense opened up but unselfishly she passed to Day who was quickly shut down and the chance had gone. Although changes were made during the second half Clare Halfpenny for Jessica Pyne, Claire Long for Emma Laing and Claire Poulton for Kelly Mullender. The players coming on did not improve the way the team was playing and Mulbarton scored a third midway through this second period. There seemed to be a total lack of togetherness during the game with maybe one or two sets of players playing amongst themselves and not playing for the team which has got to be irradiated before weeks game against Cornard Ladies. Player of the match awarded by the opposition was Debbie Williams which also echoed the thoughts of the manager for her sound overall performance. The game started brightly and quite even but Sawbo found themselves one down after 5 minutes when the referee awarded Haverhill a penalty because the ball hit the arms of Jessica Pyne who had try to protect herself from a ball that was blasted at her from a couple of yards away. A very harsh decision that Haverhill took with open arms. Debbie Williams was unlucky not to stop the spot kick with a dive that missed by inches. As if to put the record right the referee was then on hand to yellow card a Haverhill defender who timed her challenge late and from behind on Laura Day who was heading for goal when she was brought down. The visitors extended their lead on 20 minutes when poor marking at a corner allowed the Haverhill player an acre of space to drive the ball into the top of the net. 10 minutes later the score was 3-0 to Haverhill as Sawbo began to lose concentration in the defensive third. The second period started as the first had finished with Haverhill attacking and Sawbo defending, and the half was just 2 minutes old when the visitors netted their fourth. Sawbo then started to play a little and enjoyed a little more possession of the ball. From a move down the left the ball was floated in to the Haverhill box and Kelly Taylor was there to control and shoot past the Haverhill keeper. But then the start of a mad five minutes that saw Claire Long booked for dissent, a referee who had clearly lost the plot and a club linesman who seemed desperate to have his team have a clean sheet. The referee had clearly not seen any infringement for the goal but after being directed to the away club linesman he changed his mind and gave a free kick to them. There was no explanation for his decision and when questioned by Long quite vehemently his decision was to show her the yellow card. Long was soon replaced by Claire Poulton and Sawbow continued to show more character but on 85 minutes they had to endure another error to make the score 5-0 and 2 minutes later the final nail was placed to make it 6-0 to the visitors. Sawbo must learn that positional discipline is paramount to a team playing well as several players went awol during the game which puts unnecessary pressure on their covering players. After a strong first 5 minutes the referee failed to keep it going and as a result the home side suffered. Sawbo learnt a hard lesson on Sunday that you cannot expect all referees to give you the protection that you think you should have during the game and also to keep playing no matter what until the whistle blows and then you can stop. Kelly Taylor was given the player of the match by the opposition but mention must go to Ann Anstey who once again was playing out of position contributed for the whole ninety minutes and also took over the captaincy for half the game. What a difference three days makes when the colds and flu hit town. From a full registered squad of 20 players just 11 were able to travel to London Colney for this County Cup game. Sawbow started the better of the two sides and with the slope in their favour pinned Colney in their own half for the opening encounters. As a result of this pressure Ann Anstey threaded a ball through the Colney defense to Laura Day who shot the visitors in front on 3 minutes. Sawbow pursued this form until the 20 minute when a goalmouth melee saw Debbie Williams make a superb save at the feet of the advancing Colney forward but she was unable to hold the ball (from the sideline it looked as if the ball was kicked out of Williams hands but there was no whistle) and as the ball squirmed out of her hands it somehow found itself at the feet of a Colney player who had the easiest of jobs tucking it away for the equalizer. During the first half the Colney No 10 was booked for a late tackle. As the half went on Colney began to get back into the game although they did not produce a major goal scoring opportunity. Then just before the break a speculative long ball found the Sawbow defense on their heels and the Colney player made ground at pace and put the home side ahead. After the break Sawbow soon found themselves 3-1 down when the midfield was slow to react and the defense were left with a one on one situation that the Colney player exploited to the full. This spurred Sawbow but they were unable to maintain a concerted effort on the Colney defense although Day did have two mild chances but was not allowed to take full advantage of the situation because of the close marking by two Colney defensive players. During this half a second Colney player (No 8) was shown the yellow card for a late tackle. Colney scored their fourth goal with just 5 minutes left on the clock. Sawbow were subjected to a very strong and physical side that showed no respect for fair play. Professionalism in their play is not something that a player grows up knowing it is taught. This type of play will never be part of the way that Sawbridgeworth Town will be coached or will be part of. It was a shame that Arseley did not read the script. The home side started briskly which saw Sawbow back on their heels from the first minute. Sawbow found themselves slower to the ball passing the ball with no conviction and even at times giving the ball away after gaining possesion. Sawbo's back four was time and again cut open as if at will by the home side and when the sort after half time whistle sounded Sawbow found themselves two nil down. The second half saw a better Sawbow performance although still 40% below par. A slight alteration to the back four saw debutanat Clare Halfpenny and Jackie Frost change positions and this made the unit more efficient, with this stability the midfield started to gain possession and Sawbow pressed forward with a little more purpose. Claire Long, Laura Day and Kelly Taylor all had shots on goal but they were without substance and were easy for the home side keeper to gather up. Arlesey scored a third on 70 minutes against the run of play but overall deserved all that they had worked for. A goal for Taylor towards the end of the game was consolation for a better second half performance. With 19 players available an almost full pair of teams took the field. Split into two teams one Red and one Blue it was the blue team that took the lead when Kelly Taylor fed Laura Day who slotted past the advancing Debbie Williams in the Red Goal. Emma Laing found herself the supplier for the second blues goal when again Day was found free and her shot found the left corner. The blues made it three when Taylor shot from distance and when the ball bounced in front of the diving Williams on the hard ground the ball bounced higher than expected and it went over the keeper into the net. Laing was then found free in front of goal and she slotted the ball home for the fourth. Although the blues were scoring the goals the reds were still competing, and time and again they just failed in front of goal. With the score four nil Claire Long was found free with a long ball and without hesitation lobbed the advancing Jackie Frost in the blues goal from some 25 yards to get a goal back. The final goal of the game was a rasper from some 20 yards when Sharon Dawson was found unmarked and she drove the ball into the top of the net to make the final score 5-1 to the blues. Unlike the previous two games it was some 8 minutes before Stevenage equalised. Karen Lau arrived late and was quickly put into the fray. Within what seemed like five minutes but could have been twenty Stevenage were 3-1 up and it was half time. Debbie Williams in the Sawbo goal was making save after save as time and again the Stevenage front line broke through the makeshift defence that Sawbo had to put out. With some 9 players out of a squad of 19 unavailable there was a huge amount of pressure being put on those that were playing. The last minute signing of Charlott Turner helped with the numbers but her debut was put to the extreme test for the promising 14 year old but perhaps a better baptism would have been when the full squad was available. To her credit she battled well and is a future player that will improve with every outing. A further three goals were scored for Stevenage during this second period but Taylor got her second of the game with a sweet free kick theat the Stevenage goalkeeper could not hold. Stevenage selected Laura Day for player of the match but without the outstanding abilities of Debbie Williams in goal the score line could have been a lot higher. Sawbo have not always been good travelers but today they showed great strength of character to see off a resilient Corton Ladies in this ERWFL division one league game. A fairly even start saw both sides probing but with no end result although Corton did show the better of the early exchanges. The deadlock was broken on 23 minutes when Laura Day latched onto a through ball from Sharon Dawson and after running with the ball some 12 yards drove the ball home under the advancing Jo Hook in the Corton goal to give the visitors the lead. Like last week the advantage lasted less than 2 minutes as Corton equalized through Nikki Wigg. It was some 13 minutes later when Sawbo's Ann Anstey was released down the right and after quickly getting the ball under control crossed for Day to net her second of the game to the right of the diving Hook. After the interval Sawbridgeworth controlled the game with just the odd blemish for Debbie Williams in her debut game in goal to clear up. Central defender Jessica Pyne then won the ball midway in the Sawbo half and ran the ball to nearly the halfway line and chipped a pass to the ever running Day who once again was one on one with Hook and again got the better of her slotting the ball home. With the game now relatively safe Jo Gregory was replace by Kelly Mullender who slotted in well down the left playing against her old club. Captain Sharon Dawson was also replaced on the hour by Michelle Wood who used her long throw to good effect. Day became provider when she broke down the left and drove the ball across the face of the goal for Emma Laing to tap in from two yards. The fifth and final goal came after a corner by Wood was not cleared and xox turned three yards out and put the ball just inside the post. Once again Laura Day was voted player of the match by the opposition but mention must go to young defender Jessica Pyne who had an outstanding game. 07-09-03 Stevenage Borough Vs Sawbridgeworth Town 1 - 1 The first game of the season and although not what we expected a draw was a good start. The first half was dominated by Sawbo as time and again the lack of confidence in front of goal prevented the early breakthrough. As early as the 8th minute a corner by Kelly Taylor found Clare Long free in the six yard box but her connection sent the ball screaming over the bar. There were then a succession of 11 corners for Sawbo but all were defended well by Stevenage and the scores remained level at the break. 6 minutes after the restart the deadlock was broken when a three man move started by Laura Day found Long who slotted the ball through to Taylor who shot home from 12 yards inside the right post. Unfortunately the lead lasted just 2 minutes. Stevenage threaded a long ball into the final third and Amy Vye was the quickest to respond and she leveled the score with a 12 yard shot that just beat the dive of Jackie Frost. Overall Sawbo just deserved to win the game because of the amount of possession but credit must be given to Stevenage for keeping going and defending well. Laura Day was awarded the player of the match by Stevenage but mention must go to Ann Anstey who was playing out of position but still maintained her ability throughout. What is also very good for a coach is to see many players at training sessions, last Wednesday for instance there were 18 players training (a first for some time that so many were there). Amongst those present was the future of the game as Charlotte Turner and Gabby Bonich both at 14 years of age started training with the squad. It was also pleasing to see new faces in Emma Darcy and Diane Smeaton training for the first time as well. Along with these four newcomers was Sarah Almond who has been training for a while and is making big strides forward as she begins to understand the ins and outs of football. So a message to all those players that may feel at times that they would like a night off, this season places are to be fought for both at training and in games. Have a good one Dave Dawson (manager)
